Dayton, OH Police Participate in Alpha-Stim® Research Study

Work related burnout, “compassion fatigue,” and mood and sleep disorders are all issues endured by law enforcement professionals. Given the challenges faced everyday on the job, it’s no wonder that police officers bear indisputably high levels of stress.

The National Institute of Justice reports that inadequate or outdated equipment, rotating shifts, and ever-changing duties and responsibilities contribute to officer stress and fatigue. Additionally, sleep deprivation – a direct result of irregular working hours – leads to increased sickness, higher risk of involvement in automobile accidents, and a greater incidence of dying in the line of duty. In fact, a study found that “four out of eight officers involved in on-the-job accidents and injuries were impaired because of fatigue.”

Electromedical Products International, Inc. (EPI), a medical device manufacturer based in Texas, aims to lessen these issues in first responders and is conducting a study with volunteers from the Dayton, Ohio Fraternal Order of Police. In the study, police officers will use an Alpha-Stim device for 6 weeks, and will track their progress over that time period. Volunteers will report on the quality of their mood and sleep over the course of the study.

Alpha-Stim is a non-invasive, FDA cleared prescription medical device that delivers safe and effective non-drug relief of anxiety and insomnia. Officers participating in the study will get to keep the $800 device at no cost.

Backed by more than 100 independent clinical research studies, Alpha-Stim has been proven time and time again to work quickly, safely and effectively. It is trusted and relied upon by the United States Military, and it is offered at more than half of the nation’s VA medical centers.

EPI recently donated devices to first responders in its hometown of Mineral Wells, Texas. The recipients of the devices provided feedback for the new Alpha-Stim iPhone progress-tracking app. A newly developed Android app will be tested by the participants in the Dayton, OH study.
